Here is a link to a video of a big buck trying to nap, which confirms what Dan says about them sleeping, lol. Prepare to laugh and get some good input.

Very neat. I wonder how many times a day they do that? It sure looks like he never hits REM sleep.

It looked to me that he really wanted to be positioned a certain way. I kept watching the small sticks in the foreground it looks like the wind might have been going from right to left in the video from the way the brush was moving in the wind.
Maybe I'm reading too much into it. Cool video. Thanks for posting.

This video helps me really understand an actual visual of what Dan talks about when they get groggy and that you can get away with some things close to their bedding in the early afternoon.
I always thought that the big bucks never sleep, lol!

I watched without Facebook.
I seen several bucks bed this year mostly smaller ones. But I seen a forker do a couple nods and out. Then he curled up in a ball but was awake at least every half hour. Till another buck came.

That sounds like it would have been a blast to watch, I am jealous.

Re: Big bucks trying to nap video
The buck I shot this year was doing that after I took up track. I found him laying down and he looked up at me and I just stood still for a while. Ended up sneaking up on him and getting another arrow in him. But while I was sneaking up he was doing that the whole time. I figured he was dying but wanted to put him down.

This makes me curious as to how alert they are while nodding off...would walking on leaves for instance to setup wake them up sharply or would they just somewhat ignore it.

Cool.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
