Best option for a merino wool?

This was probably discussed and if it was can someone post the topic. But I am looking for a merino wool option to wear for my upper body. It always seems to get cold. I was wondering for the guys that have some, what brands do you like, what do you wear as far as layers. I want it mostly for stand hunting on those cold, windy days. Any suggestions would be great thanks in advanced.

The best quality merino of the various brands I own has been Minus 33 for base layers.

I have first lite underlayers and have been very happy with them.

If you are not in a hurry to buy keep an eye on Sierra trading post they are constantly having deals on merino wool, you just have to be patient until something you want comes up. I picked up an icebreaker merino top on a killer deal late last winter, with the same thickness of my first lite at probably a third or quarter of the price of first lite.

Buy an alpaca sweater second off eBay. You'll never look at merino wool the same way again. You can pick them up 20$ shipped to your house sometimes. 5-7x warmer than wool (it's literally like wearing 5 wool sweaters). They're awesome for sitting.

i've have core4element, first lite, minus33, and kuiu.


i would say hands down minus33 is the nicest of them......if you want it in camo for more than just a base layer, i would go first lite

darn tough socks for merino socks, in addition to being great quality, lifetime warranty. i just sent in 4 pairs this summer that finally wore holes and they sent me 4 new pairs free.

Minus33 for base layers and First Lite or Ice Breaker for mid layers. Really like my Kanab 2.0 pants. Also like the Ice breaker zip up sweater. Merino wool is great stuff. Warm, quiet, doesn't hold stink.. But it's expensive and the care (wash / dry) can be kind of a PITA. Some are line dry only.

The Alpaca sounded good until I looked up how to wash and dry it. The whole hand wash thing is a deal killer for me.

I have LL Bean base layers and they are great. About $130 for a set. I cant believe how much more wool keeps you dry and warm than the synthetics.

X2 totally forgot about my ll bean base layer (i use as mid layer on top of silk) they are great wool at a good price
