Matching bucks in person with trail cam pics?
Can you guys see a pic of a buck, or many pics, and then recognize him in person? I would guess its usually not an issue, and I think Im good at recognizing them. However, what if you have several 8 points, of different sizes? Ive noticed night photos of antlers sometimes look bigger than the actual buck. Do you see the same?
I need to get a couple pics up here and see if you guys can match up bucks on the ground with trail cam photos.
One in particular, is a GIANT 8 pt on cam, been after him 2 years. I shot a nice 8pt, and it crossed my mind if its him and maybe Im no good at matching them up...

I usually look for some defining characteristics. Maybe a slight curve on a tine, shape/sweep of the main beams, throat patches can very, etc.

I can often tell. It takes some experience to develop a touch for it.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

The problem with night photo's is that it's hard to judge body size so on a 2.5 year old it can look like a good rack but it was because the deer only weighed 150lbs. But even so you can usually be pretty sure.

Re: Matching bucks in person with trail cam pics? PICS ADDED
Ok here goes. What do you guys think? I tried to pic 2 pictures that were roughly same angle. I have some of alive and dead that look MUCH bigger than in these pics, but the angle apparently makes a huge difference. I was also looking for features that would set them apart.
What do you think? Same buck? Not same buck? Why?

I agree with Bucky. Not the same deer.

Nope- the live buck has a little curve to his right G2 and his left main beam has an upward curve.

Is it obvious to you guys or did you actually have to look? Is the age or size close to you or not even close?
I've never had one I couldn't bet w confidence on matching.

To me it was instantly clear they were not the same deer, but I did have to take a few moments to figure out what the actual differences were so I could put them in print. What is even more difficult though is matching the same buck from one year to the next...

Not the same. I'm looking at the right g3 (smaller on cam buck), brow tine length, and mass.

I dont think it's that obvious. The curve on the left antler might be there if the head was up in the same angle. Either way, congrats on a nice buck!

Like everyone is saying. Different buck. What caught my eye was the up curl on the main beams and the mass is greater on trail cam photo

Looked it over pretty good before determining.
