How much do you value the actual [glow=red]opening day[/glow]of a firearm season? I know lots of guys here are fired up for the bow openers, getting to the mature bucks at the first available chance. Now that the surprise factor is somewhat gone, and the rut has passed for the most part, how much do you value an opening day? Im speaking for success rates not for tradition, comraderie, etc. Flat out big buck killing success rate.
I have a chance to hit 80 acres private land in Ohio hill country for the gun opener, all day. Hasnt been bow hunted much to my knowledge if at all (unkknown if tresspassers have). Its south central, Hill country for sure.
Its a 5 hr drive eahc way, 1 day hunt.
I "plan" on hunting the 2 day late gun season and muzzy in Ohio, but maybe on public if this land doesnt look promising.
How important is opening day? Regards to success rate.

Re: How important is opening day? Regards to success rate.
MN's rifle season is early Nov so opening day can be pretty huge, a fair amount of the mature bucks shot by our group come opening weekend, the rest come a bit later in the week during the peak rut dates. The hard part is figuring out where to find them, the action has been pretty darn random over the years. A few trailing hot does early, a few in the evening near doe bedding and some mid-day funnel bucks. All of the opening weekend bucks I can think of have been shot in different areas so with that many people in the woods luck is playing a major roll. I've take one good one opening day (mid-day) the rest have come closer to peak rutting times.
One thing for sure, that opening weekend rifle hunt in early Nov has a dramatic affect on the rest of the rut and daylight activity. The bucks know what is up, I can walk into an area after a snow and see amazing sign and big tracks everywhere, come daylight the deer know to lay down or get shot.
