Hey guys,
Ya'll were right... Buck beds were right where you guys said they would be today, or so I thought. I hunted a public land for the first time today, and after sitting in a deep draw for a few hours and not seeing anything, I walked up to a long point -- like another ridge off the main ridge. There was finally a very gradual elevation decline, way down an old logging road. I bumped a deer as I came up on some thicker stuff including several fallen trees. Looked around and saw several areas that looked like beds. Tamped down leaves backed up against a wall of thick stuff, one with a small rub next to it. There appeared to be several spots around the fallen trees that could be used in different winds. However, I looked hard (or thought I did) but could not find any white hairs for final confirmation....??
The farther I went, I found more thick tree fall areas that looked like bed areas, and then started finding several rubs on thicker cedars (2-4" thick) and higher up, some about hip high. This was exciting, as those were the biggest rubs I've seen to date.
Even without finding the white hairs, would you guys say these were buck beds? Or just a rub line do you think?

Also, this area was a mix of pine and hardwoods. Some small ferns and mosses scattered on the ground, but not adjacent to any food sources, leading me to believe this was a buck's primary hang out in early season and not just a rutting area... Don't know. Should have taken more photos for you guys. Thanks for any help you can offer up.

The area you found with the matted down leaves up against thick stuff is beds... It can be tough to find hairs.

I spent quite a while looking through the place. How long should I stay away before going back to try to set up on him?

Now thats the million dollar question... Hard to answer that. They might be back tomorrow, they might stay away for a month. If it were me, I would either hunt it the next day, or leave it alone for a month or more.

When I left yesterday I was tired and hungry and thinking I just might look for an easier place to hunt... But now I'm obsessed with getting back in there. I will wait as long as I can. Next month is probably better.
