Re: Do you back out?
A couple weeks ago I had an adult doe come in from behind me on an island and was straight down wind. I was wearing my work clothes that I had on at the shop all day with camo over, and because I forgot my hunting boots was wearing my soiled steel toe work boots... I was dropping milkweed watching it bounce off of her, and she fed showing no reaction at all on acorns for over an hour before wandering off... If your going to move next sit anyway, and your not hunting that spot over and over, you never know how the deer will react, or if you will blow over them...

I usually sit tight as well for the above mentioned reasons.

Re: Do you back out?
Depends on the situation for me. I've done both. This exact "back out" move landed me my biggest buck though. I sat a morning stand intending on an all day sit. The wind switched at noon and was blowing directly down the funnel I was hunting. Packed up and drove 35 minutes and climbed another tree and 2 hours later I was standing over a 172" Michigan buck.

Re: Do you back out?
If Im in a location that Ive confirmed previously that the new wind direction would/could ruin my hunt I get down. If Im in a less familiar area, Ill stay put and see what happens.

I usually stay where I am. You just never know what's going to happen.

Re: Do you back out?
My set ups are wind specific. I always move to a more favorable location. I hate doing it, but am almost certain a buck will not come at me with the wind blowing his direction.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Re: Do you back out?
Perfect timing on the post. The wind completely switched on me 45 min after setting up. Never been in the area before this is the only spot I had in mind. I'll sit in hopes they come from another thought area

Re: Do you back out?
I think it really depends on the location and time of year. I did have a rut hunt where the wind did a complete 180 on me and was totally messing up a funnel I was sitting. It was about 8:30 in the morning and I decided to take a short walk and setup where my sent was blowing over a pond not far away and I was still watching the same funnel from the opposite side, not 5-10 minutes later I had a buck on the ground. Lots of luck and timing involved in that hunt but if I didn't move he would have winded me from 300 yards away and I never would have seen him.
Bed hunts in the evening I don't see much reason to move, however if it's early in the day and the rut I certainly would think about making the switch.

Bump.
Figured some guys are doing their first Bed hunts and might have this come up.

99% of the time I'm not going anywhere, but on the rare occasion I put myself in a situation where it's time for a #2 I'll move along..

Re: Do you back out?
As others mentioned...all day sit, rut sit, I move. Many times early season the only shots I have may only be downwind. If there is any other choice for shots., I will stay. If not...and it's that specific, I will leave. Sometimes I just grin and bear it knowing the odds are very low. Like when the last 15 minutes the wind becomes "light and variable".
I guess it's kind of a spot by spot call. I am pretty mobile as well.

Re: Do you back out?
I picked depends. If it's a hunt where I'm only going to be in the woods for a few hours I'll sit tight but if it's an all day sit I'll make a move for a spot with a better wind.
