Re: Iowa hunter in trouble over trophy buck
It has something to do with mineral... which is legal in Iowa but you cannot hunt over it. If you saw the video, the deer was shot in a LUSH clover field. He was not "baited"
This is a total jealousy situation, the sad part is Mr Franz is going to have to spend thousands in legal fees to have a "chance" at getting his trophy back.

Re: Iowa hunter in trouble over trophy buck
I wasn't there, wasn't part of the hunt or pursuit of the deer so I don't know what went on behind the scenes... BUT everything i've read about it, I've watched the video multiple times, etc.... I gotta think someone is jealous like you other guys mentioned. He even had someone videoing the hunt to prove that it was harvested legally! But alas, jealous people will try to find any ounce of evidence they can get to to ruin someone's life.

I just wonder how the Fish and Game have the authority to confiscate anything with nothing more then an accusation with no proof?

A guy films it to partially protect himself and he still gets screwed.
Do bucks frequent mineral sites in October? Seems unlikely to me.

I get that -but this should be easy to prove/disprove - they have film and can pinpoint the site - go do a damn soil sample. At some point this guy deserves due process - three witnesses says it was legal, a film all but proves it - and yet one person that was not there claims it was illegal????? That is called heresy and it wont stand up in court. State F&G laws do not trump constitutional rights

Re: Iowa hunter in trouble over trophy buck
Confiscating the mount could be protocol in case the head "disappears".
Interesting to see what unfolds here, this could possibly change how many "trophy hunters" tag their animals. If he's found innocent but the head isn't returned, or found guilty for something petty I could imagine many would resort to calling a Warden to assist the recovery of any deer over "X" inches. That way there is no doubt that the animal was taken legally.
We'll see.

If he is indeed innocent they should automatically slap the person giving false information with a huge fine. That will make others think twice about doing it in the future. Pretty sad if it's jealousy.

Re: Iowa hunter in trouble over trophy buck
If I killed that deer legally the mount wold go MIA until they proved otherwise.
Sounds like the law is grey enough that even if there was mineral in the early season it wouldn't hold up
That deer is A BEAST!!!
