Re: Leaving your gear in the tree
A buddy of mine used to. Got freezing rain overnight and his steps were too icy to climb. No hunting that morning. He doesn't leave his stuff in the tree anymore.
Let's go Brandon!

I take all my gear in and out every time. Never know if something comes up where I wouldn't be able to come back...

No have had many opportunities going to and coming from the stand.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Re: Leaving your gear in the tree
I will leave my stand out on private but the bow never leaves my side. I read a hunting mag story once where a guy left his bow on a stand overnight. There was a pretty bad freeze that night. When the guy went to draw his bow on a deer the next morning the bow broke apart in mid-draw and he got hurt pretty bad if I remember correctly. Don't remember exactly which mag it was where I read it.
If you want to kill a deer you have to be in the woods.

When using Summit climber I've left for periods of time (rifle or ml), just cause it's so dang loud hauling in, but never left bow, thought about, just couldn't pull the trigger

Never... I hunt most on public, but even on the private I have never thought of this. I would not be able to leave my bow / stand in the woods overnight.

Re: Leaving your gear in the tree
Ive left my bow and other gear in a stand where I knew I would be back the next morning. Especially during the rut when they is a how setup and I want to get in and out fast. Ive done it a bunch of times. It works out well for me on private land.

Nope, porcupines, mice, and other critters like to chew on stuff. I don't want to climb up into a stand in the dark some morning expecting a great rut hunt, to find a chewed bow string. Worse yet, I don't want to find out the hard way that happend when I go to draw back.

Re: Leaving your gear in the tree
It's an assumed risk. If I suspect Racoon hunters in the area, I don't leave anything.
This season On Sunday night oct 11, I decided to try a ridge near a pond on a section of public I'd never hunted before. Once I got over there nice white oaks were dropping acorns. When I got close to where I wanted to set up a big doe blew and ran off. I decided to hunt the spot in the am. I left my ozonics, lw assault and my fanny pack with my range finder. I walked out with harness, bow and gps. Came back in the am busted another deer out before I got to my stand, climbed in settled and killed a small doe. I was happy to have the meat.

Re: Leaving your gear in the tree
The only time I have done it was when I shot one that I needed to leave overnight and wanted to sneak out as absolutely silent as possible.
I just look at it as a human scent bomb all night in the tree by leaving stuff, and the few back to back sits I have done from one tree consistently went poorly even without gear in the tree overnight.

I have occasionally but since I do a lot of all day sets I need to carry out so I can restock my thermos, water bottle, and food supply.

Nothing stays out that cannot be locked. Weapon is always with me. I know you plan on being back before light but what if you are a few minutes late and encounter a shooter?? What if it rains over night… too many variables for me...
