Getting winded?

Unread postby Robbins » Wed Oct 21, 2015 10:25 am

Ok here is a question I've been wondering. 2 times over the last month I've gotten in my stand played the wind for my hunt and have been busted (deer blows at me). I know for a fact they were upwind of me and this has me confused. Am I missing something here?

Thermals, movement, access trail, skylined. Could be lots of things.

If it is a deer you want a shot at try snorting back. If they are snorting but not leaving they are not sure what you are. Snorting back will confuse and them and then they will try to circle you. If they snort back then snort again. I only do it two times. Odds are 50/50 that you will see them.

If they are snorting and not leaving they cannot smell you.... ;)

Were you actually in the tree?

If so I would say they caught movement in the tree and were trying to figure out if it was any danger.

In the past I have seen deer snort and stomping at squirrels, birds and other critters till they figure them out.

They most likely heard you walk in and know about where you stopped. They were probably bedded nearby, close to where you heard them blowing.

I agree with the other guys. If they are sticking around they dont have your scent.

This.

Is it in the same tree? If so they have your number and you need to move.

It was the second time hunting the stand this time and I had just got in and was getting the bow ready when the deer started snorting. She later circled me and was more curious than scared. There is a chance she was bedding nearby

They busted you moving and weren't sure whether or not you were a threat.

I've had this happen with the wind in my face thinking there's no way they could smell me....until I dropped milkweed and seen it blow behind me and then circle back in a draft toward the deer in front of me

Yep milkweed tells the truth...and its surprising once in a while!!!

But I agree she caught you moving and didn't know what you were...I believe they snort trying to get you to move...i know if I freeze and they can't smell me they will blow and blow and stomp and circle...

I'm gunna start shooting them lol...usually big ole mature does...

I always thought a deer blowing would alert all the other deer to stay out of the area....but I've had other deer come in...and I've had the same deer leave and come back...

Never a mature buck...but I dont see many of them anyways...

Anyone ever have a buck blow at them??? I've thought about this a long time and I can't recall bucks ever blowing...they just trot off...or run out hard if they really busted me...

I did have a suspected buck blow the other day on a wind shift...i can't confirm it was a buck though..

Anyone notice that or am I crazy?

REMEMBER THAT DEER BED ON THE EDGE AND WATCH ACCESS, This is particuartly true when you hunt the same spot more than once. They tend to bed well hidden with a thick area behind them watching an open area down wind. Most likely they are watching you approach your stand.
This is one of the main reasons all hunters regardless of how they hunt need to understand deer bedding...
