Avg distance (non beast) hunters walk from road?
I'm deer hunting hill country and I was wondering how far non beast hunters typically walk from their truck to hunt? I know from my experience most of the human sign slows after 1/3 of a mile. I've seen some where they've walked close to 1 mile in but the majority seems to slow after 1/3 of a mile. Then you have some that walk to the closest green field. What have you seen from your experience?

Depends on the country. Top access with trails, I've seen average guys over a mile back. Bottom access with steep ridges, water, etc usually keeps the average guys under a half mile back.

Yeah I think it depends on the terrain. In the areas I hunt a lot of people will walk the distance if it's an easy walk, but if you find areas with a barrier such as water or really thick brush most people dont push through to get to the other side.

x2. Easy access and guys will definitely go farther. I hunt in some areas that take me a long time to get to, but are only 600-800 yards from a field edge, but are real thick. Don't see much for hunters in there. Same area where there are trails I have been back 2+ miles and seen lots of flashlights during opening day of gun season.

If there is easy access in and out in the dark hunters will be there. If that distance is .2 or 2 miles doesn't matter in my territory.
Seems the average guy is afraid of getting lost.

Yea, like others have mentioned seems to depend on trails. On a trail lots of guys will walk a mile. I hate seeing trails
Otherwise in the hills without a trail most pressure is limited to less than half a mile or a 200+ foot bluff whichever is closer. Its right around that 200 foot mark that guys start dropping out around here.

in one certain public area that I hunt - some of these guys walk about 150 yards from the parking lot - yes there is corn but there is so much human scent that these deer just move at night early season up to the beginning of the rut - I avoid the whole area -

I don't think distance has much to do with it. Hunt the sign. I've seen mature bucks within 200 yards of a parking lot on their feet in daylight hours.
Everyone who begins deer hunting is told to walk as far back as possible on public land. As a result, many hunters push farther back and are sitting in and walking through bedding areas without a clue they're there.
I will buy the notion that good spots to kill mature bucks are USUALLY harder to access, but not always. Killing deer is about being where the deer are, wherever on a property that may be.

It doesn't matter how far they walk.. it's WHERE they walk! Two of my best spots are less than 200 yards from a parking lot. Heck one of them is less than 120 yards from a major parking lot, and it's home to a 4.5YO BEAST.
Distance means nothing to me, to be honest. I haven't earned much respect killing mature bucks like Dan & Andre and the like but this is what I have seen; and if I can find it then anyone can do it

3/4 to 1 mile on public land, maybe more - average 1/2 mile or so from bike on private land

Around here how far they walk from the road depends on how far the deer they shot from the vehicle runs.....
