This year is a rebooting year for me. Been going on an annual hunting trip to the upper peninsula for over 25 yrs. Due to poor success the last 4 years as a camp we decided to stay in the northern lower peninsula this year. I have been in a slump myself. So this year will be a new area and I added 4 extra days to my trip as well. I have no knowledge of the area other than It has our state's population of elk roaming around.
I am starting from scratch....I found the area for camp on the google earth. I started studying the map looking for terrain features...Reading a ton of posts on here and watching a ton of videos.
Does anyone have any advice on power scouting a new area as not to waste time scouting and not hunting? I know the former hunting area like the back of my hand...so scouting was not needed very often.
rebooting this year...

Drive the area thoroughly to check hunter pressure. Cyber scout for bedding and funnels and hard to reach honey holes

Look for edges. Mature timber to clear cut, swamp to dry ground.
You did use those sort of features and topography to pick your new hot spot right?

You don't have to be the best, just do your best.

having a little difficulty seeing swamps on google earth....I'd like to find a spot where the swamp , dry ground, clearcut . and forest all come together. I had a spot like that once....hunted that area for 12 years before the state clear cut the whole area flat...minus the swamp.

I don't see it mentioned alot, but someone on this forum turned me on to a software called WindNinja. It is used for wildfire fighters to predict the progression of a fire based on the topo, windspeed, time of day etc. Combine that, Aerials, and Topo maps..... and you have one DEADLY combination to narrow down your scouting areas.
Go where none other dare to go, and there you'll find success.
