Quota hunt scouting question

Unread postby tmarbut » Wed Sep 23, 2015 3:34 am

When are the best time(s) to scout for a quota hunt I was drawn for?

I was drawn for a Nov12-14 gun hunt. There is a gun hunt the weekend before, as well as a primitive weapons hunt the weeke d before that (last weekend of October).

I have several general areas I have located but also realize things will probably be much different by the time my hunt rolls around.

How do you guys do it, and how do you suggest I approach it?

Is the rut in that area during your hunt? If so, I would go ASAP and prep trees in the most secluded funnels around thick/steep/bedding stuff etc. your intrusion won't hurt much for rut movement IMO...

I would study maps and pick out secluded bedding and funnels, and leeward ridges to focus on that are mostly going to be over looked by others.

The hardest part is going to be patterning the hunters and the weeks previous hunters. Check out websites (GON) for previous years hunts to see where the 'honey holes" are and avoid the area at all costs.

Sounds good Dan. I have been doing some of this. The biggest challenge is that it has good access almost everywhere. I have one private access & a couple of (hopefully) overlooked spots to check...soon.
Much appreciated.
