I hunt paw paw leaves as a source for wiping when I'm outta tp! Put 3 leaves together and it's perfect. I have seen paw paws drop fruit but 95 percent of paw paw trees I've seen are fruitless. Maybe it's a regional thing or maybe only male/female trees drop fruit here maybe they only drop every other year. I haven't researched them much. Paw paw fruit is more of an anomaly than a norm from my observations.

Shake the trees bonecrusher, you'll find those delicious paw paws hide very well. I have never found any in am area that looked liked it would work for hunting otherwise I would have tried it.

I've never saw one in Michigan. Aren't they a southern tree?

I see them fairly frequently in PA. When you find one you usually find a bunch of them because they tend to grow in fairly thick patches. Paw Paw trees are an understory species with very large leaves. Virtually no sunlight hits the forest floor under a fully foliated Paw Paw patch. I have witnessed some areas wher the deer feeding sign has been very heavy under fruiting Paw Paws. I can't really remember exactly when they fruit, because I work in the woods throughout the whole year, but I think it a short lived event when they are useful as forage for deer, however they do seem to key in on them.

Just do a google search on Paw Paw and click on the images. Tons of great photos of the fruit and foliage.

They ripen around the same time as persimmons but don't last long. They rot quickly. I think they taste like banana pudding. Wife puts em up in the freezer.

Found a number of patches on a property I was working on today. Some of them had a lot of fruit. I cut one that looked a bit defective in half and took a snapshot. Trying out my new photobucket account. Hope it works.
