Only way to the big league is to let him go. All depends on your goals. If you shot 1.5's and shot 2.5's get some under your belt first than target 3.5's and so on. It takes time...Patience!!! Your the only one that will pull the trigger when it comes down to it. No regrets.

I agree. I don't want to be the guy that stanley was talking about. I have a wall full of 1.5's. No regrets but I would not be happy with another. Hence the reason for this post! 2.5's or better   :L:

Judging rack only, body looks 120 lbs dressed making him a 1.5.

I would agree with Ed and go with big 1.5 yr old.

IMHO birth date plays a huge part in what a buck looks like in his 1st two years.

Several years ago I had a spotted fawn with winter fur come by in late October. Next season, there was a tiny bodied spike with 2" tines running around. You can't tell me he'd jump to a 110" two year old or even a 100"er...

A real early fawn will have a lot nicer rack as a yearling and at 2 than a late fawn.

Lockdown your spot on. I talked with deer Biologists at a Wisconsin check station years ago. Buck fawns born early. 1 year 7 to 1 year 8 months at hunting season weigh more and generally have larger racks. Especially compared to late born buck fawn now 1 year 4 or 5 months old or younger.

This info came at a time when most thought all spikes were inferior genitic animals. Not true some were just late born fawns still catching up with their year mates. By age 3 many are bigger than their 2to3 month year older year mates.

Ive got to imagine the genetics have something to do with it too. Heres another healthy 1.5 yr old from the same spot. Ive got to imagine theres a lot of places in the usa that 1.5 yr old bucks do not grow racks like that.

I killed this buck near home about 15 years ago on opening weekend. He only dressed out at about 140 lbs. I suspected right away that he was only 1 1/2 but my taxidermist confirmed it. Can't imagine what this buck may have become at 3 or 4 years old. I did a shoulder mount as a reminder.

I think that is a 1.5 with spectacular genetics. Not just good - great. Looks like a 9 pointer? That's like 1 in 100 yearlings probably....good chance he would be B&C by age 3 or 4.

The only yearling I have ever personally seen with more than 8 typical points was a basket racked 10. I am pretty sure I was on the same buck the following year, he grew to a 140 class 2 year old and then jumped to a 170 class 3 year old.

On the flip side, I have seen some 2 year olds with racks that small....high camera angles make it tough to judge body size but he looks pretty thin for 2.

At the end of the day though, shoot what makes you happy.
