Thermacell

Unread postby jmaas07 » Fri Sep 04, 2015 2:36 pm

decided to ditch the bug spray and get a thermacell. For those who use them are there any helpful tips on placement? is the holster necessary? Any helpful pointers in general regarding the product, mats and butane would be appreciated. Thanks.

Make sure you check the little window on top to make sure it lights. Doesn't always light up the first shot.

They say if you can smell it, that's probably not good for your lungs. I prefer to catch a faint whiff every so often, makes me feel like it's working.

It needs about 10 minutes to keep the mosquitos off you, but the dang thing works. I usually clip it to my platform under my seat, depending on the wind. if it's windy it won't do much good, but the mosquitos shouldn't be bad either. Not too often that it's super windy early season anyhow.

During 3d season I keep mine in my release pouch and the bugs don't bug me after it heats up. During bow season I clip it on my bag when the mosquito's start bugging me. Mine has a tendency to go out when it lays on its back for too long, so I try to keep it up right. When scouting, I usually just hold it in my hand. Look on YouTube for the refill videos. Pretty easy to do and only takes a couple.minutes. I just wish I could find a supplier for the pads only.

You can refill the butane with lighter fluid by modifying them and can DIY for the mats as well:

If not the holster, at least stealth strip it. I'm gonna get a holster...easier to hang.

I use the holster and one of those mini bungee cords. You could probably figure out something without the holster.

One other tip. Some designs vary, but I've had mine switch on in my pack which Estes all the butane. Just something to be aware of.

Also torn it on before you get to the stand because it makes a loud click.

2nd those saying get the holster. A real pain to keep it upright and exposed from a pocket and it gets hot. But don't trust it entirely. Mine came unclipped on a walk out and I lost it. The 2nd one, which i didn't bother with the holster on, fell in the lake out of my pocket. I got a holster for the third one...

I don't have a holster yet, but would recommend one as well. I used to just set it between my feet and the stuff would end up in my face and never felt good after sitting over that stuff too long.

You can definitely smell it, but if they smell it, they can smell you too… The slight increase in scent stream is well worth the payoff IMO, not to mention in warm weather you generally smell like big foot's armpit by the time you get to your stand anyways...
