The FINE line was crossed.....

Unread postby virginiashadow » Sun Oct 31, 2010 12:51 pm

I had the good fortune to be able to hunt today. Within 5 minutes on stand I had seen a spike and a doe, followed by a 3 pointer within 10 yards an hour later. I passed the shot. About 30 minutes before sundown a doe came in to my set-up. She was painting hard and just stood in the saddle for 5 minutes before moving. It took her 10 minutes to give me a great 10 yard broadside shot. I was "calm" and I told myself to aim small and hit.....I shot right over her back! My goodness. She bound off 20 yards and stood there for 10 minutes. For the next 10 minutes I told myself I am done for the year with my recurve. I am a pretty good first year shooter but evidently not good enough to be trying my skills out on game that deserve more from me. It was my third shot and third miss of the season.....

BUT, thank god she turned and started walking to get me another shot right above a steep drop off ( I was hunting a high ground rim). Without thinking and without thought I pulled and launched an arrow as she stopped at 15 yards...HIT. Down she went and started thrashing on the ground. I nocked another arrow and launched...hit! Dead deer.

I am SO happy right now. But to be honest I am not sure if I can finish out the season with my recurve because my confidence is shot and to be honest I am not that good with it. In practice I am above average for my time shooting (less than 8 months) but I am not good enough in the deer woods like guys like Schultzy. I will think about it over the next couple of days while I ENJOY my blessings in the form of a recurve doe!

Congrats! Recurve can be tough. I bought Masters of the Barebow videos and learned a lot. I shoot instinctive, and making sure I have a deep three finger hook on the string helped my shooting more than anything. Keep shooting, the more I practice with my recurve the better I am with my compound!

Thanks so much guys. I can honestly say I think I fired over 10,000 shots with my recurve over the past 8 months. Some months I was shooting 2,500-3,000 shots. I guess I just came unravelled in the deer woods during my first three shots. I am going to be very happy to be eating some backstraps for lunch today.

NOW it is time to kill a buck. I will have one down by the end of the week. (I am an eternal optimist in the deer woods).

I knew you would connect buddy! If you love hunting with the recurve than the only way to improve is to keep doing what you are doing. More success will follow :D Congrats Virginia BEAST!
