Buck Down - 11pt

Unread postby headgear » Sun Oct 31, 2010 12:34 pm

Very excited right now, my first mature buck with the bow. I would really like to start out and thank the "big buck serial killer" for his wisdome, without his knowledge I would have never gotten this deer. I read every book, magazine and watched every tv show and came up empty for 10 years bowhunting. Then I finally found and bought marsh bucks and it was like getting slapped in the face with a bowling ball. I have learned plenty on my own but I just absolutely knew when I found the videos and this site that I found the holy grail of mature bucks. He's not a monster, a shade under 130 but in the heavey hunted MN public I bowhunt he is a "beast".

To keep from writing a book I will try and keep this semi short. I scouted this spot out last winter and knew I had a great spot. I was out on a small 1/4 acre island in a public swamp and everywhere I looked was private land and permanent deer stands, but no one was beast enough to get into the nasty stuff. I walked a giant circle 1.4 miles way out of the way. I had posted earlier about crossing upwind of the bedding area and got advice to move fast and go for it because I had 4 hunts before the rifle season so I dove in.

Jumped a nice one on the way in crossing a beaver dam, but he wasn't the guy I was after so I moved on, saw the sign I needed to see on the way in and got setup on two potential bedding areas. Almost right whe the moon was underfoot (5:45) I see a tamerack getting worked over right next to the primary bedding area I was watching. I feared we was going the wrong way (I crossed crossed upwind) and gave him two short grunts, within 30 seconds I see a rack floating above the brush. He held up just out of range for 20 minutes, I thought I heard anothe deer coming (grouse) and deciced to grunt one more time as I was in between them. He slowly made his way and I took the perfect quartering away shot.

He ran 60 and I thought I heard a gurgle and a crash. I waited 30 and walked to where I thought he went down. I was just about there and crash...crash...spash way out in the swamp. My heart sank and I got out of there fast and quiet replaying the shot in my head 400 times over in bed that night. I lined up help and after a long night we were there the next morning. I first wanted to find my arrow to gain more intel, after no luck I was standing where I was the night befire when I catch a glimps of antler in the swamp. I was 10 yards from him the night before, the shot was perfect and he was mine. A few hoots, hollars, and photos later we were dragging him out. It wasn't a crazy long drag but plenty nansty and comical (river crossing spill) and we had him loaded up. To top it off we also had a first b-day party for my little girl so the whole family was here for party. Pics coming in a few minutes.
