Good story PK, thanks for sharing.

I remember sprinting (as close to a sprint as possible in a foot of snow) 100 yards toward a buck out in the open one time too, trying to get within 200 yards of him. It worked, the buck just stared at me not believing what he was seeing, but then I blew the shot cuz I was panting so hard

Lol. Yes, I knew heavy breathing was going to be a problem. I was going to just plop down prone as soon as I was in range. He was standing on a fence line that is mowed regularly as a firebreak. Oh well. Seeing him cross that open funnel before dark let me know it might be worth sitting over an evening this year...

Great post. Good luck finding him this season. Did the camera have much else on it?

Is this a zone C quota hunt?

If I remember right, you were successful using this same technique last year, was it on the same wma?

Not this year, I will be out of town for gun season in that area. Muzzle loader season is quota draw only for one weekend and I did not get drawn. But if I get a permit next year I may just plop a tripod in the middle of that flag pond. It is only about 2' deep and I could reach out and touch him any direction he(or another buck) comes from.

No, this is a zone A buck. I believe the bucks you are thinking of were 2 years ago and they were zone D non-quota bucks.

I did get video of this buck too, I could not grab a frame that shows his rack really well but he appears to be a 2.5 year old 10 point with both g4s broken. He is coming through about an hour after dark so I believe is he bedding a few hundred yards away. He could be a real nice shooter this year too:
