bedding preference

Unread postby megwan » Sun Aug 23, 2015 1:46 pm

In big woods when there is lots of hilly terrain and numerous smallish swamps what is a bucks preference for bedding?

I'm the only pressure til November, and then a few guys might hunt next to the ATV trails. I suppose now there eating acorns. And the oaks are mixed in with all the maples on the ridges. So until I start hunting it I suppose they feel safe on the ridges for now. Do wolves alter bedding?

If you are looking for mature bucks, look at the steepest terrain that offers a 'downwind', downhill slope (leeward side ridge) for the prevailing wind during that time of year. Also check the nasty thick swamps, all things equal they seem to prefer the ones that have 'irregularities' in their edges, points, bowls, corners etc… something that gives them a strategic advantage.

Here is a thread about bedding in small swamps or 'frost pockets' in big woods:

Thread about reading topo maps and Autumn Ninja explaining the high crows feet (thermal hub):

Thanks pk I think I missed a couple of those. I've read most everything on deer hunting and scouting, but missed that somehow. When I started bow hunting in 06 I decided I wanted to shoot bigger bucks, but its easier said than done its been a struggle. Since finding this sight I've found renewed optimism, and have learned much and appreciate everyone's knowledge and willingness to share it.

No problem. Some of those threads are quite old and probably buried, I knew which terms to search to dig them up.

Bow hunting mature bucks in the big woods is about as tough as it gets, but not impossible. Good luck!
