walk in
Curious what guys wear walking too stand when the hike is long and thick with brush and briars
Merino is an obvious choice due too it's wicking capability but it gets tore up and snagged easily
Any suggestions? I used car h arts but they were pretty bulky and too hot

Re: walk in
I sweat really easily so I usually wear a tshirt and thin pants throughout the whole season regardless of the weather. I carry spare layers and my hunting clothes in my backpack. I get dressed at my tree once i cool down.

Re: walk in
Merino Wool and those military grade wicking shirts are really nice as well but both are very expensive. I usually where just a t shirt and regular pants and pack all the rest in. When i know I'm going to get sweated up I will usually bring a large ziploc to put my drenched t shirt in. I'll dress at the base of the tree.

Re: walk in
Old denim jacket works. Not too hot over just a base layer for the walk in (or blood trailing) and they hold up to the briars. Just throw your regular jacket on over it after setting up.
No Shortcuts. No Excuses. No Regrets.

Re: walk in
You will get heated up no matter what you wear. I jip down everything and carry an over vest. Walk slow is key. You should have the wind in your face that also helps.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Re: walk in
Briars are a major issue in a lot of areas where I hunt. I can tell you that my wool gray wolf woolens outerwear goes through briars quiet and almost snag free. The briars certainly don't hurt them. I began looking for some cheaper and cooler alternatives that worked well. I found that some of the military surplus wool does almost as good and can be found cheaper than most hunting clothes. I've even seen some articles since my discovery of guides praising military surplus wool. I can add some links if you would like to give them a look.

Re: walk in
You can shop around various surplus stores and find the best price, etc. Swisslink is rough on the shipping :/
East German Wool Pants
http://www.swisslink.com/products/pants ... w-49-2270/
Italian Wool Shirt
http://www.swisslink.com/products/shirt ... t-37-2365/
Swiss Wool Gaiters
http://www.swisslink.com/products/footw ... pper-6-48/
Swiss Wool Pant
http://www.swisslink.com/products/pants ... nt-49-170/
Example of an article: (I don't own this particular pant)
http://www.petersenshunting.com/gear-ac ... for-39-95/
I hope you find these worth a look. For the kind of briars and brush I have here, these do much better than denim as far as protecting me, and they are quiet unlike canvas. Again, I don't claim that they work as good as my 27oz Gray Wolf Woolens. But for a MUCH cheaper route I now use these for non-hunting purposes (hanging stands, scouting, checking cameras, etc). And on cold days when I need two layers I wear these to my stand and put my Gray Wolf on over them.
I used a dye remover on the shirt and it turned grey.
Personally I'd buy these to use as my normal hunting clothes before a lot of the "normal" more expensive hunting clothes that are out there.

Re: walk in
Good stuff BigCedar. I think as a result of you posting those links the massively overpriced huntingwear industry just took a hit
In regard to the original question I just wear regular pants and shirt to stand, I always carry my outer layers. Suit up near my stand, typically where I start my final slow approach 100-200 yards away. I have torn up a lot of jeans walking in over the years but they are cheap. If I slowed down to the point that I would not sweat while wearing all my clothes it would take me hours to sneak in to some of my deep spots. I will sneak if I have to but there is no reason to sneak a full mile unless I am stillhunting.
