Mark the Biologist wrote:That's a great question. I'm not sure what the answer is, but I can speculate. Some of the coloration likely comes from rubbing the antlers against tree bark. I would think that if the buck is rubbing velvet before the blood vessels close, some of the dark staining would be from blood too. I've seen some bucks come out of velvet with very light colored antlers, so I don't think it is necessarily that the sun bleaching them. Nutrition and genetics could play a role too, but I honestly can't say, I've never read any scientific literature that studied this.

Mark, If I may? I have seen some litature on antler coloration... From what I have studied, antler is white. The coloring comes from the rubbing. It is said that bucks that rub sappy trees like pine get dark colored antlers and bucks rubbing hardwoods stay more light colored.

How do biologists go about figuring out what the deer in a particular region are feeding on? I know that deer foods vary from one region of the country to the next so I am interesting in learning "how" to nail down the food sources in my area.
Thanks for your time.
