Deer per square mile
What are the estimates per square mile for where you hunt? And what would you consider "above average" numbers

Re: Deer per square mile
83,000 sq miles here.
Deer herd is estimated at 300,000-400,000.
so that's 4-5 overall.
I have seen places with 50.
I have seen places with 5.
Round these parts right now probably 10-20 on average.
Kansas managed larger hunting areas (mostly lakes) less than that.
Some semi-urban areas that do not see much gun hunting more then that.
These are all guesses.

Re: Deer per square mile
It varies in my area depending on habitat. I would guess about 30-40 in my county pre deer season

Around where I live- 3-5
Public land I hunt 4 hrs away- DNR est. 25-30
Public land I hunt 5 hrs away- DNR est. 50-60
Even though the majority of my deer hunting is within :30 of my home, the majority of my deer sightings are during a one week timespan when I am hunting public land many hours away.

Re: Deer per square mile
WI provides estimates for our entire state. These estimates are given in both a pre-hunting season as well as post season estimate. Pretty interesting numbers

Re: Deer per square mile
Less than 10 per square mile in the majority of big woods and swamps I hunt. I have some public areas around home that are as high as 20 -30 per square mile, best guess.

Re: Deer per square mile
There's a state park here in Georgia that claims 120 - 180/sq mile.
http://gastateparks.org/content/georgia ... tation.pdf
The conclusion:
• Unhealthy deer population
• Twice as many parasites as normal
• Almost no body fat
• Susceptible to disease & starvation

Re: Deer per square mile
I'm all over the board. <5 in the northwoods to well over 100 in the Central WI farmland. I consider 30-40 to be about ideal in mixed farmland if you are looking to hunt big racks.

Re: Deer per square mile
Based on herd surveys I've conducted we are around 50-55 per square mile..
On 3300 acres, approx. 105-110 bucks and 130-135 does + fawns. About 20-25 of those are bucks 3+ yrs old.

30-40 in my area but I've never really noticed a difference. 90% of the deer are in 10% of the woods anyhow.

Used to be less than 5. Since hurricane issac, it's a good bit less.
