Re: Anybody hunting in these high winds?
I didn't hunt this morning, but I was outside at daybreak letting my dog do her duties and I had a 150 class buck pass by at about 40 yards. He was staying on the downwind edge of the woods quartering into the wind. I could see that he was pretty jumpy with the heavy winds. He stayed in the field through an area that they typically run the woods....I believe the rattling limbs and leaves in the woods had him feeling more comfortable out in the open alfalfa.
Find his shed, find his bed, use your head to make him dead.

Re: Anybody hunting in these high winds?
Today I went out and checked a couple trail cams I had out In the woods I hunt. On 2 different occasions I jumped a doe and could've shot both deer. They jumped up, up wind of me and had no clue what or where I was. I had the one doe at 15 yards and the other one at about 20 yards.
I had to be careful while In the woods today. I saw 4 different tree's tip over In these crazy winds and watched the top of another snap. One fell about 40 yards away from me. Kinda spooky at times.

I've been avoiding the woods. Lots and lots of large dead standing trees where I hunt...I would imagine there will be some woodcutting being done after today is over. WOW! This is nuts!

Re: Anybody hunting in these high winds?
I hunted in the same type of wind back in November 2007 and almost had two very large trees land on me as I was walking thru the woods!
Waiting till the wind lets up is a very wise decision.

Re: Anybody hunting in these high winds?
I shot a very large 8 pointer years ago on November 4th in a down pour with 40+ MPH winds gusts...
Here is the article if you have not read it yet:

I have not been hunting but have seen some deer moving around. This would be great for sneaking into a bedding area and whacking them on the ground. They would never see, smell, or hear you.
Good time to hit a public property you want to get to know, and scout the bedding areas now with bow in hand.
Or better yet, go after those beds you scouted last spring that were so perfectly situated you could not get close without getting heard or seen...

Re: Anybody hunting in these high winds?
Good point Dan! I know just the bedding area I can sneak into in the morning and a west wind will be perfect. This is a small 1 acre island that is surrounded by water and cattails and was being used by at least two mature bucks over the winter. I went in there after a big snowstorm in February and there were 4 huge beds in the fresh snow and you could see how they were all facing a different direction almost like they were guarding the island from every direction. All of the beds looked exactly the same so I don't think they were made by only one buck since they all looked the same age with the fresh snow. I have never seen that before but hopefully one of them is still bedding there tommorow morning since it is still supposed to be quite windy!
That would be really neat shooting a buck in his bed!!

Thats how does bed... Not bucks.
Does bed in circles and look out for there group. Bucks bed solitary and worry about themselves... When they do bed together such as summer bachelors groups, I have not witnessed "circles", but more random.
Does on the other hand, I have observed bed in circles many times all year long.

I guess that is possible but I kicked at least one mature buck off the island when I was scouting and there were plenty of very large tracks in the snow. Is it possible a mature buck would bed on an island this small with does in the wintertime?

Re: Anybody hunting in these high winds?
Yes... But probably not side by side unless the doe has come into late estrous. I have seen them bed on the same small islands and larger bedding areas, but they stay apart from each other if not rutting usually.

The deer seemed to be moving tonight. I saw a few doe in a few places on the way home from school around 4:30 and then i took the atv out and saw two different young bucks and a few doe out in a few diffrent feilds. I wonder if there getting antsy becuase they have been doing a lot of sitting tight?

Re: Anybody hunting in these high winds?
I found an island much the same with 4 beds all facing different directions as well.I toook it as 1 buck using the island for all winds tthe 4 beds were only few feet apart .The island was mabey 25 feet across.I think he would just get up and shift with a changing wind .Perfect bedding spot water all around ,tough to access.

Re: Anybody hunting in these high winds?
How big are the beds? Any indication of a big buck i.e. big tracks< any other indicors, etc. Generally beds in groups are does from my observations.

Re: Anybody hunting in these high winds?
I love it when a plan works out!!
This morning I snuck into a bedding area I found during post-season last year scouting but stopped short because the winds were relatively light. I set up my Assault about 75 yards downwind of the bedding area and everything was pretty quiet until 8:30 A.M. so I thought I would give a few grunts on my Tru-Talker. Right away a buck stood up from his bed and looked to see where the grunt came from. When it looked like he lost interest and turned around to bed again I gave him one more grunt and this had him heading my direction thru the water and low cattails. He tried to get downwind of me but couldn't because I had a water filled ditch directly behind me and after getting within 20 yards of me he lost interest after about 10 minutes. He was not quite a shooter being that he was a small 8pt and looked to be a 2 1/2 year old. Back he went to the small island he was beddind on and layed back down. Later I saw another deer on the less than 1 acre island but could not tell if it was another buck or a doe. Then the wind really started picking up again so I thought it would be a good time to sneak out of there.
Usually I don't do much blind calling but I had a hunch there was a buck bedded there so I felt this was the only way I would get him to show himself.
After lunch I will head back out again to a different area where bucks are bedding and hopefully they will really move later this afternoon like the moon charts are predicting.
