A statute has changed the procedure for claiming a deer hit by a vehicle. Previously someone wishing to take possession of a deer had to notify law enforcement, who would respond and issue a possession tag. This process has changed.
Statewide, law enforcement officers will no longer respond for the sole purpose of tagging a deer carcass. The change went into effect July 24. Wisconsin Statute 29.349 allows the driver of a vehicle who strikes a deer to remove the carcass from the scene after notifying the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources by calling 608-267-7691. Car-kill deer tags are no longer required.
As in the past, the driver of the vehicle that collides with a deer has the first opportunity to take possession of it. If the driver does not want the deer, any other person who is present at the scene of the crash, or any other person who arrives at the scene after the crash, may take possession after notifying the DNR.
Authorities will still respond to car vs. deer crashes that result in a reportable amount of damage to a vehicle, private property, or results in injury to a person.
This change applies only to deer carcasses, and does not change the procedures for taking possession of other animals. Car-killed bear and turkey must still be tagged by a law enforcement officer.

Between my dad and I in the last 25 years we probably have picked up 25 deer hit by cars. Not once have we ever been issued a tag by any of the police on the scene. This is Illinois though.

Got to get a salvage tag in Iowa.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
