During high winds, what are your experiences with deer movement? In the woods, the fields, the marshes... Do they get on their feet, lay low, etc., etc...
Let's hear some scenarios, experiences and hypothesis'.

From my experience, they are very skiddish and dont like to move much in daylight during high winds. Very to little daylight activity in the fields.

Re: Deer Movement in High Winds
Over 20mph winds I think there a studies that show minimal whitetail movement. Makes sense... there vision is messed with (everything is moving) and smelling capabilites are minimal/hindered, hearing as well is limited
I have noticed you can get away with a lot more movement in a tree with 10-15 mph winds and deer seem to feel comfortable with those wind speends.
With the 30-50mph winds predicted in the next few days in WI, I don't think you would catch me up in a tree unless I was deep down in a ravine or in evergreens sheltered from the wind!

Re: Deer Movement in High Winds
Deer have to eat/drink, but they can do that where they feel safe, and just enough to survive.
I say hunt draw's and timbered hillside's out of the wind........

Re: Deer Movement in High Winds
We had 30+ MPH winds here on Saturday. I used the wind to my advantage and snuck into a bedding thicket I was previously unable to get close enough to. I seen a bunch a of deer and even had a few bed within twenty yards of me. However, no big ones came close enough.

I don't see much on a windy day but it almost never fails for the wind to die down right at dusk nearly everynight here so its always worth hunting just for those last 15 minutes.

On a windy day dont stay home, play the wind. Walk and stalk slowly, catch them while they are bedded......but dont hunt your favorite stand...

Re: Deer Movement in High Winds
Get into the cedars or pines. There is little wind there even in high winds. still hunting is a great tactic.
I was rifle hunting in Minn. a few years ago and we had winds with gusts to 50 MPH. I was careful where I parked my truck because I was afraid a tree would fall on it! I headed into a cedar swamp I knew about. It was almost calm in there and I still hunted less then 200 Yds. before I dropped a nice buck. No one else in the hunting group saw a deer that day.

Great post Sam. This is a topic worth talking about because it is hard to decide to hunt or not. Last 15min of light is usually best.

Re: Deer Movement in High Winds
I was just going to start this thread to see what others thought! I'm heading out today with 50+ gusts and believe bucks will be on their feet near bedding. I know a couple guys who have shot very large deer under high winds (30+). I seem to notice more and more that the older deer walk through the woods like they own it. They are not afraid since they are probably the largest animal around but want to remain undetected. A friend stalked up within 10 yards of a huge buck with a drop tine in a corn field with 70+ gusts that day. The buck was on his feet feeding at 3pm! I plan to sneek into a river bottom thicket today and hunt one of the trails heading out of there. I may go out tomorrow morning also.

Re: Deer Movement in High Winds
Sam hit it with the primetime wind break and that is one option. I concentrate on the low laying stuff along the rivers. Knowing the area and where deer can get a break from high winds is a plus, amazing sometimes how close one can get with these conditions and what a rush! Heading out later this afternoon after the monsoon let's up here.
