I picked a few cattail heads yesterday for wind floaters. Anybody use these instead of milkweed? What is the difference to milkweed floaters? Do they work has good has milkweed? Looks like you could get alot of floaters off one head. Thanks

Re: cattail wind floaters
I don't care for cattail floaters. Milkweed flows much better in very light air currents.

Re: cattail wind floaters
I would think that any thistle type seed floater where one can remove the seed would work well. Milkweed has a fairly large seed so when it's removed the floating part should be very bouyant compared to others with smaller seed sizes to proportion of floating material.
I used to use egg yarn or glow bug yarn for tying egg flies for flyfishing. It floated well but sometimes one stripped off too long or thick of a piece and it didn't work as good. Separating the hanks into a smaller diameter bundle would help. As well as cutting it into short lengths would help with this. The old dispenser it came in for wind check use just wrapped the material around a center post. I think using a chew can or old film canister like some of you are using for milkweed would work fine.
Advantage of using egg yarn? It comes in multiple colors so one could carry a range of colors for use in different light conditions. If some one else is curious about this maybe you could do some expermenting and side by side comparisons. I'd like to do this myself but just am not feeling well enough at the moment.
