Ruger I hunt a 3300 acre parse land I'd venture to say rarely does a buck use our property that we don't have on camera. For sure it's rare one is killed that never been on camera. Not all were patterned, but for me I tend to find one buck I focus on and then have others in the same area I'd kill if I saw them. Then I have of day bucks, that are also wall hangers but less killable or something and do I just hunt them on days when weather isn't right for my target...

I spend hours running trail cams and cyber scouting. That tells me where to consider boots on the ground. Then I can usually do a 10-20 min walk thru and make a decision/ mark a tree/ consider access... Then back to the computer... And concentrate cameras..
My area is also to thick for shining/ glassing. My food plots are 1-2 acres. My woods have visibility of 50 yrds now in the most open spots. Once leaves are off, maybe 100..,

Boots on the ground for me an knowledge of the area of years past.

Cyber for new area for sure.

Shining is not legal here.

Trail cameras are on the bottom of the list for me. They are more of an inventory tool for me. Because when September hits an the velvet is all but gone. The days get shorter an nights get longer. Things are changing so fast in the whitetail world. You have to try an be ahead of the game when they start into the fall patterns. Because starting October in about 8 or 9 short weeks main event is done an over.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

For me, where I hunt, glassing and shining seem to be fairly close to useless. The only non-forest areas are the road side, and a few private fields next to the road; the rest is national forest.

Shining probably don't work to great in that environment, But I have gotten a few of my biggest bucks in wooded areas glassing... Glassing does not have to mean watching a field... I have done well watching oak flats from down wind or just walking trails slowly with bino's... Certainly not as easy as watching fields, and maybe in some cases more crossed with observation stands, but its a great tool when used correctly, but it takes patience.

Thanks for the tip Dan. I had actually been considering this a bit after reading your "One hour season" story the other day. I'm definitely going to give it some effort.

One of my favorite things to do after a boots on the ground hunt is hit the computer, cyber scouting is fun but once you walk the land and go back it really puts everything together.

I feel like this would be my list if I were trying to find specific 'target' bucks instead of just hunting the terrain/sign and seeing what pops out.
No Shortcuts. No Excuses. No Regrets.
Everybody's selling dreams. I'm too cheap to buy one.

For where I hunt
- Trail cameras
- Observation stands late summer.
- Post winter scouting

I really rely on all three and would rank each equally

This is why my list is similar. I don't like hunting based on hunches and big tracks.

1. Cyber scouting.. because I can do it quickly and easily.
2. Boots on the ground.. easily as important as cyberscouting to me as one transitions into the other.
3. Glassing
4. Cams.. I should be alot stronger in this area. Seems like others are using it as a tool with alot of success.
