milkweed picking

Unread postby Peeps22 » Wed Jul 15, 2015 10:10 am

When does everybody in wisconsin usually start to pick milkweed pods to dry out? I havent been out in the woods the last couple of weeks due to work and being out of state. How early can you start picking?? Looking to get a pretty good stock of them to start drying.

You know I was thinking the same thing, only in Indiana. Have several real nice, green healthy pods but didn't want to pick them to early.

They get past the green stage and turn brown and hard. Crunchy. The natural split down the side can be split and just pull as needed, no extra container unless you want to.

Are you able to pick them now and let dry for awhile? I just happened to see some milkweed this morning next to the driveway pulling out for work haha.

They haven't even put on pods around here yet.

That said, I did pick some green last year and dried in a closed paper bag in my truck during the day while it was parked at work.

Later in the year just get it once it dries naturally.

Primetime is just as they are starting to dry naturally. I usually find those right around opening day in mid-September. I have a patch I hit on the way into one of my early season spots and collect a few every year. They can be picked earlier but just take longer to dry out.

If you pick them too early you will know by the sticky milk coming out of them. They will still dry fine but takes awhile letting them out in the sun for a few days. Once they pop open they are dry and then I throw them in a bag.

If you pick them early you can cut a side open and lay them out to dry, I just put them in a open top box or on top of my work bench and leave them be for a while. Don't pile them on top of each other or they will mold.

I have found the one's I pick too early don't seem to float nearly as well. Thinking they have not completely grown to maturity and not developed enough. Anybody else notice this?
