Teeth Aging
I realize there is some speculation as to the accuracy of cementum aging of teeth; but that is the best I can do to try and figure ot the age of some of the deer we kill.
I just got the results back form Matson Lab on the aging of the buck I killed in WI in Nov. of 2014. They graded the aging they did as the most accurate according to the condithion of the teeth and the slides they harvested from the two teeth.
They aged it at 4 years old.
This was not a surprise to me but I do find it interesting that this means it was three years old when I took the picture of him the previous year when I passewd him directly under my tree.
As he is today:
Shortly after he died.
As he passed under my stand in 2013. I doubt that his rack would score 120" as a three year old.
His body did scream 3 or 4 yo though as he approached. He has been a healthy specimen.

Interesting, love the aging stuff.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Thanks for sharing. I, too, am not surprised in consideration of the jump he made from ages 3 and 4.
Again, slammer of a buck. I hope to have mass like that adorn my wall someday.

Very cool. It's interesting to see the results from the test and compare them to your own hypothesis.

Re: Teeth Aging
That is interesting. Thanks for posting that. Never know for sure but wonder if he was a runty spiker as a yearling.....that many say never amount to anything.
The other factor is in 2013 when he was a 3 year old was the worst antler year I have seen in 15 years probably due to the weather/super late spring. I saw a lot of big bodies bucks just like that with seemingly stunted racks. The more I study it the more I think a really bad antler year can knock off 10 inches or more from a rack compared to average, and a great year can add as much.

Interesting point JoeRE. Another factor can be the actual age in months of the buck. If he was born late. Like say to a doe that was breed at 7 months in January or Febuary. Some thing that is common in good ag areas with mild winters. It can take a few years for full antler potential to show.

I was going to add that about 2013 thats partly why. And last year was a good year. But I'm sure it was several things.
Your buck and MoBigBucks just had that look that did it for me. Awesome deer. Congrats again
