survey

Unread postby john1984 » Mon Jul 13, 2015 11:40 am

In your opinion what would be more difficult?(archery wise) Killing a 2.5 year old in early November on public from a tree stand Or killing a late season post gun season 1.5 year old public buck from the GROUND? Archery only

It would be difficult for me to kill the 2.5 in early Nov because if I am bowhunting early Nov I am out of state and looking for a bruiser.

It would also be hard for me to kill a 1.5 that has ran the gauntlet and made it to late season and will most likely see 2.5.

But to answer your question I think most hunters would be hard pressed to kill a buck, any buck, late season with the bow from the ground.

Both are relatively easy if you ask me, but I'd pick the 2.5 year old in early November simply because their are less of them. I pass up more yearlings than 2.5 year olds in all seasons.

I think you will see more young bucks goofing around during the November rut

The 2.5 would be more difficult where I hunt. One year I passed up 30 year and a half olds. If I see two 2.5s or older a year its a good year.

Killing anything late season from the ground with a bow is really really tough. Assuming you are hunting deer that have been pressured a fair amount, man they are jittery after gun season.

A two year old buck is still going to do a lot of dumb stuff during the rut that is why he probably will not make it to 3 years old.

A huge percentage of all bucks killed every year are 1.5 year old bucks.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

I think the late season buck would be harder. If you put in the time a 2 year old is relatively easy to kill during the rut. Any deer late season can be a serious challenge after months of heavy hunting pressure plus the fact that there are just so many less deer on the landscape.

Michigan. Its actually getting better in my area. More hunters and landowners in my area are practicing qdma. Some years I wouldn't see a buck over 1.5.

The amount of antlered bucks I have seen after Dec 1st is a very small number. Most r dead or hiding where I will never find em.I am going with the 1.5 yr old in Dec.

I second Old Ranks response! I rarely see a buck (let alone any deer) after the first weekend of gun season, but pass numerous 2.5 yr old bucks on public land the first couple weeks of November

Man I'd guess and say the 2 yr old is harder on public. Less of them. I don't think from the ground is much worse, its the nervousness of walking in daylight after gun season that would get one near you. Depends on terrain I guess.
