Correlating Transition + points in hill country

Unread postby Ryan » Sun Jul 12, 2015 12:44 am

With deer tending to bed on transitions and points, which do they prefer in hill country when they are close to one another? In the pic below the points are just below the transition of pines, Do you guys think deer would push a little further up the hill so they can bed on that transition or would they still prefer the point and travel the thermal tunnel instead of traveling that transition?

My take on this... if the pines are thick enough to be a bit of a barrier, then they would bed out on the points, next to a tree or brush clump, to take advantage of their sense of smell.

If the pines are not much of a barrier, they may not be bedding there at all.

As far as which direction they go in the evening, it is a flip of the coin. Sometimes they will walk the thermal tunnel, sometimes the transition edge of the pines, sometimes straight down hill. The sign should tell you which is the most preferred.

I would think you use their nose first and even in the open, they can use their eyes too. boots on the ground will answer your question.
