deer crossing rivers videos

I have never witnessed a swimming deer before and also think I underestimated their swimming abilities. Eye opening videos:

A few years back a few guys picked up a buck that was 8 miles out in the middle of the Delaware Bay in the shipping channel between Lewes, DE and Cape May NJ. Its 18 miles across and a big piece of water and get pretty rough. He was exhausted when they got to him but the pulled the boat next to and saw he was pretty tired and actually got him on the boat. He was to tired to struggle. so they took him back inshore and once he got his legs, off he went into the marsh.

I also saw and acrticle a while back that they found a doe swimming in the Gulf of Mexico a few miles off shore.

Anybody that thinks water is a deer deterent is sadley mistaken.

Good stuff.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

I have witnessed swimming deer many times mostly in northern WI and Canada. Seen does swim out to give birth to fawns on islands and also seen bucks swim out to islands to bed. Thinking mostly to avoid detection by predators more than anything. They are actually great swimmers when they need to be.

Here is another thread on this.

I had some friends that lived on the Wisconsin River near Stevens Point. There were a couple of islands in the river that they saw deer go back and forth from on almost a daily basis.

Deer bodies are very bouyant. Especially with their winter coat. First time I pulled one I killed across some water I figured it would be a chore, bur it was the easiest part of the drag.

It's amazing how fast their thin legs and little hooves can propel them.

To quote Gene Wensel "they hesitate to cross rivers and lakes as much as we hesitate to cross the street."

I guess when they are pushed enough or their drive to be somewhere exists you never know.
