Gonna Be A Long Night........

Unread postby DropTyne » Sat Oct 23, 2010 3:34 pm

I finally got a crack at this 8 pointer I've been actively chasing tonight. Fourth sighting of the year and I was dialed in tight. He gave me a great show which I will elaborate on if I am fortunate enough to recover him. Ironically when I hopped on I saw the "bad hits" topic. Must be something in the air. I hit him just a tad back and low. He ran 25 yards and stood there for 40 minutes hunched up with his tail tucked between his legs, ears back on his neck, and hair standing up on his back. He could barely walk and as he moved back into the thick brush every step he took was excruciating pain for him. At one point he tried to take a step but thought twice and put his foot back where he first had it. When he finally took enough steps to dissappear into the brush i snuck down stealth like and made my way outta there, didnt even check the arrow. I am freaking out now, questioning everything that happened......... I am going to wait until the sun is up to look, that will be 14 hrs. shot him around 5:30.

That deer will be dead in his first bed so long as you give him time. If no rain is predicted I'd wait till noon. My bet is there won't be much blood regardless so good luck.

Wish the best of luck to you DROPTYNE! I got a feeling you hit liver and if you did he will be dead. Im impressed with the way you got out of there right away and stealthy. Most guys I know after seeing what you described would go track him down. The way you described his reaction sounds like liver or gut shot. I got a good feeling for you man. Good Luck.

Agree with Muddy. If its going to be hot you could go a little earlier, say after breakfast. He will be dead near where you last saw him if left undisturbed. Have fun gutting that stinker. good luck

If rain is forecasted then I would get up and go to that stand tomorrow morning a little earlier than you normally would. When it starts to get light enough to where you can see pretty well get down and find your arrow quietly and look for sign quietly. Go from there based on the sign. You described a buck that sounded hit lethally if he was staggering and having a tough time walking. I think he'll be dead. Just take your time and move slowly.

That's just what I'd do in that scenario anyway, take it for what it's worth. I have radar on my cell phone so I'd be sitting in the stand as long as I could updating radar to see when/if the rain will start. Heck, it may not even matter on the rain if he doesn't bleed.

I also agree with DOR, have fun gutting him, take a clothes pin!

Sleep well knowing he'll die! I'd be up early watching the radar. First light I'd be out there. Take your bow just in case he still has a little kick left when you find him. He will be laying not far from where you last saw him.

Sounds like liver to me too. He won't go far at all due to the pain. Should be close by in am.

All you can do is wait for AM. Good luck, and keep an eye on the rain forecast...

Sounds like a lethal hit and he should be dead in his first bed.
Hope you find him and can't wait to hear the rest of the story.

I agree with what is being said here, give him as much time as possible and you'll find him dead in his first bed.

I arrowed my first 8 pointer three years about like you described. I caught the end of one lung and liver. As he walked off he looked in pain. I actually saw him bed down and get up twice. I shot him at 0730. I waited 10 hours and went back in and found him stiff as a board only 50 yards from where I shot him.
