How to prevent poison ivy, sumac, etc. effectively.

Unread postby BassBoysLLP » Sun Jun 28, 2015 2:03 pm

I spent most of last November treating lyme and a poison sumac infection. While the prednisone was uplifting, it was miserable walking a couple miles back into a couple of my spots. While this method doesn't address my issue with poison sumac (I'm comfortable sleeping in my truck/woods for weeks without a shower), it is worth sharing. Enjoy!

Good stuff....I spent almost all last fall dealing with poison ivy as well....bought tecnu and thought that was the solution since I havnt got the rash since...guess the wash cloth and scrubbing is the answer. Probably wasn't the tecnu that kept the rash away now but the vigorous scrubbing since I'm so paranoid about it now.

Good information.

Thanks for posting--that was very helpful. Now I feel like I need to wash up. My arm just started itching...

Saw this video around this time last year and scrubbed down every time I was remotely close to poison ivy. Works great, I never had more than a few little bumps here and there.

Important to note this method of washing works for wild parsnip exposure, but it needs to be done immediately due to the photoactivity of the furanocoumarin (the oil that gives you the nasty blister).

One thing to add. If you do touch poison ivy with your hands do not take a leak until you have washed your hands. Your hands can transfer the oil to your twig and berries. The more delicate your skin is, the worse and easier it is to set in. Learned this the hard way. ;)
