I think he is still acting like a smart buck. He has a good set up and is using his noggin when it comes to approaching the bait. I have seen big bucks hit bait piles regularly right up to the rut and then sometimes during the rut, but outside of the first week (Oct 1 opener here) it's usually at night. Even when they are bedded close to the bait.

Yea, I will admit I don't know much about mature buck behavior around bait. Just due to that I find this thread really interesting, doesn't get discussed much seems like otherwise. Its just to me whenever there is an obvious pattern like this, I see that as a weakness by the deer and an opportunity for the hunter. There is always a way to take advantage of a pattern. I know its still probably still hard as heck.

Good luck this weekend Dan.

Any idea where he is bedding or does Dan believe he completely relocated?

Rub line went dead....he thinks he's in the area ...but it will take time to relocate with some scouting

As long as he can hunt the area around there I don't see Dan giving up on a buck of this caliber :D

Interesting comment about the rub line. How do you tell when a rub line goes dead?

Not speaking for Dan but. A buck makes rubs from bed to food source especially early season. When the rubs don't increase in numbers the buck has usually changed bed location or food source location, or both.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Right... New ones stopped popping up.
I will get back after him, but its hard living 3 hours away. There is also A LOT of pressure. There were about 5 or 6 different trucks bowhunting within a 1/2 mile, and most trucks have two bowhunters. If this was my back yard this buck would be dead meat. I would hop all the bedding areas each day till I killed him... Being its o far, I need to make every hunt count.

With that much hunting pressure it sounds like others may be onto that buck.

The whole woods is like that for miles, its a very heavy pressure area.

I thought you typically hunted pretty far from others for bear, but not this year?
