Re: Do you stop the deer, or not ?
The situation and mood of the deer will dictate. My first choice would be to stop them with a soft baaahh. However if at a comfortable range an they don't want to stop i have to pick my spot in front of them and wait for them to hit my lane.

I only stop the if I need to, prefer not to but sometimes it is very necessary. Sometimes yelling isn't enough to stop them.

My usual plan is to try to stop them with a well placed arrow

I just don't stop them much. I did stop one in 1995 that was the last time.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Re: Do you stop the deer, or not ?
I have not stopped a deer yet but have never had a deer come in on a trot. I once saw David Blanton make the usual bleet stopping noise and the deer jumped and ran off. He was baffled by it happening. Have never seen it happen that way to any other person on a video but that always made me think twice. I guess if I had a buck on the move I would try it. Most deer I encounter are just walking along, not running.

It seems like every video I see of someone shooting a walking deer without stopping it ends up shooting too far back. I prefer to stop them.

I have used a grunt call to stop a buck during the rut a few times on a buck chasing a doe with some success because they seem a little less aware and more focused on breeding.
I still feel the same way almost 6 years later. One common theme I see with most kills on video is bucks that are stopped look directly at the source of the sound and are immediately on the edge. Even a well placed shot has them sprinting wide open long distances after impact to get away from the danger and if that shot its not perfect that can really complicate tracking. Maybe I'm lucky but almost every buck I have killed with the silent approach acted like they never knew what hit them and a good majority only bounded a few times, stood there looking around and fell over within 30 yards.
