Finally found some hot sign on public land...then this!

Unread postby BackWoodsHunter » Wed Oct 20, 2010 12:40 pm

As the title says I've been poking around in some central WI public land spots and the other day I discovered one that had a planted corn field included. The back side ofthe corn field is a hardwood ridge that drops of to a swamp to the north and east and some scrubby underbrush to the west. Well the north edge of the field is lined with the biggest scrapes I've ever seen plus they are scattered throughout the woods. I know based on aerial phots theres a nice, large island in the marsh so I headed that way. Found deer trails that almost look like I could float a canoe down. One even appeared to have some floating droppings. I found some old rubs and lots of great sign in general. Best part about this spot was no human sign!!! Well i get my feet wet, only to find out that my expensive rubber boots after yrs of use now leak and my trek to the island was to be postponed. Pleased with the sign I found next time I will return ready to hunt! On my way out I followed the corn edge all the way around back to the car. Finding more scrapes, devoured corn and huge tracks I suddenly smell rotten flesh. Poking around in the brush uncovered a monster whitetail buck, gut shot and dead covered in maggots less than 200yards from the parking area and less than 50 from the dirt road. How depressing to find this after all this great sign. Its wild for a deer to live to this caliber in this area I'm hunting and then on public land too boot makes it sick that a wounding shot to the guts lead to its demise. Is this spot worth hunting or is the big guy dead and gone now?

Dang that sucks, It doesnt look like it was laying that long either. Weird nobody would find it being that close to a parking area.

It sucks but it's only one dead buck. That looks like a monster 2 1/2 to me. I would give it a shot if you found good sign, unless you have better spots.

his teeth were pretty worn down...but still could be a 2.5 thanks for the advice I'll get back out there hopefully next week...and have greater picuters to post. I really wouldnt have thought it laid for so long but it WREAKED of rotting flesh, and we cut it open all the meat was green and there were maggots pouring out of its back. It had been there awhile but for whatever reason the yotes hadn't gotten to it yet. Sweet deer anyhow bigger than anything we have on our private land further north.

Probably a youth hunt by product...... Two weeks, rotten flesh, and maggots sound about right. It also looks young to me too.

arrow hole behind the right shoulder way too far back going in at an angle right into the guts...probably a quartering towards shot with a bow
