Critters & wildlife that ruin deer hunts?

Unread postby Darin » Sat May 16, 2015 4:07 am

A topic on here got me thinking about critters that ruin deer hunts. Now most of us can vouch that turkeys roosting have messed up a hunt or 2. What other types of wildlife would you rather not see while on stand? Some say squirrels but I dont believe they are any issue... Opinions?

The worst for me thru the years has been dogs. Seeing a dog picking his way thru a bedding area while on stand is not good unless I got a gun and deer spook to me. I hunt private and neighbors dogs are usually the ones running the woods. I have taken matters into my own hands dealing with dogs on occasion.

Dogs have ruined the most hunts for me. I won't kill a mans dog but I will call him and tell him to keep them at home. I think this works as well as anything.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

I have had coyotes ruin my hunts on several occasions. Once I climbed a tree a huge raccoon was in before daylight we were both very surprised to run into each other. After some growling both me and the raccoon freaking out that I was in the raccoons home tree I relocated 30 yards away.

Turkeys for sure hunting around home. In the northwoods it's red squirell and Bluejays. If they spot you the will tell everything within hearing distance that there is an intruder nearby.

On the other hand many birds including ducks have helped me follow the progress of a buck in marsh or swamps where cover is too high to see them. Pretty cool watching them fly up as the buck moves through cover.

Mainly dogs for me, although coyotes are becoming more prevalent.

It is incredible just how goo their noses are.

A few years back I was hunting a place where the trail forks and a doe came trotting by. About 45 minutes later a coyote came trotting by with his nose to the ground. He started down the wrong side of the fork and went three or four steps, paused for a good sniff, turned around and continued down the path the doe went down. It is fascinating to see something like this and then think that a deer's nose is at least as good and is likely better.
