death beds

Unread postby kotimaki » Sat Apr 11, 2015 9:48 am

Over the years , I've taken a number of deer with a variety of weapons. With archery tackle I've noticed that almost all have expired with the entry wound down. Rifle shot deer and elk that aren't immediately incapicated and run off generally do as well. Anyone else notice this trend?

I'm trying to think about that. Have never paid much attention.

Interesting... Thinking back, I can remember the exact position of how the deer was standing when I took the shot but, I can't remember how I found the deer when I recovered it..

One of the does I shot with the flintlock this year died as you said...entry hole down...lead didn't exit...

Interesting...I may have to dig through pics now! I have "as I found em" pics of some deer kills..

Looked at a doe I shot with the bow and she was bedded almost as normal...body in the up position...

I never thought of that but now thinking about it you are right. I have experienced the same thing. I can remember the last 4 bucks doing exactly that.

I've only brought this topic up a few times and I've always been met with that "deer in the headlights look" I figured this group might give a little more insight....

It's okay to say kill here. I admire your creative writing skills though. ;)

My kills to date are ML pass-throughs. None had the chance to bed and crashed running within 100 yards. 50% entry up on finding these. Maybe different for non-pass-through wounds if instinct has them lie on it. Not sure.

I think it could theoretically be an instinctive last attempt to clot the bleeding on the side of the initial trauma.

I have found them both ways. Entry up and entry down.

I'm wondering the same thing...if the exit has anything to do with it?

The flintlock doe with no exit this season was laying on the entrance...but she was dead on her feet and made it 30-40yds tops...coincidence? I don't know...

A deer alive longer might have more time to do more...I've watched them lock wounds etc..

Interesting theory, I have never thought about it either but I agree this is the place to ask!

Thinking about it now the last three that I tagged with a bow, one died with the entry wound up, one with the entry wound down, and one was a spine shot so really doesn't count. I can't remember back beyond that. I would say on sidehills they will naturally fall downhill whichever way that is and that would make any other correlation difficult to find. I think all of those three did that.

Great observation!

I had to think back and I actually can remember a large majority of my kills. I probably wouldn't remember their orientation except for the fact I normally like to see the entry wound and how close the impact was to where I was aiming or my initial perception of the hit.

And....you're right. I usually have to turn them over.

An interesting point though is, the paunch hit ones are opposite. I don't have nearly as many of those, but the ones I remember were mostly entry wound up.

Again, very interesting observation.
