What mistakes have you made hunting.

Unread postby Tennhunter3 » Tue Feb 10, 2015 5:27 am

Hey guys I wanted to make a thread about mistakes we made and corrected. I found myself dropping my lone wolf straps when putting my climbing sticks on a tree. The fix a simple zip tie no more searching for straps.Image

Plastic water bottles even if you remove the wrapper as they become empty they crinkle the fix I stopped carrying water to the tree with me. Forgetting to attach my pull up rope the fix bought a lone wolf silent rope and zip tied it to my seat of my lone wolf Assault.
Ll bean hunting pack was quiet fleece the top pocket very noisy the fix cut off the inside of the backpack and removed the noisy lining destroying my top pocket but the pack is now quiet also removed several buckles. By making post like this I hope to help solve some of the noisy problems we run into in the field helping increase the odds in the hunters favor.

Had to unhook my harness to shoot a buck behind me to my right - got a rock climbing harness.

Forgot to hook up pull rope before climbing & dropped gear - add a S-hook to the end of my pull rope.

Ran into deeper water than expected - now carry industrial garbage bag for waders.

Clanked bow/gun on stand - wrapped the sit edge & platform edge in paracord.

I was always forgetting gear when switching packs or not taking a pack for a quick hunt - now carry all my gear in a fly fishing vest & wear it all the time.

Had trouble finding a pass thru arrow that broke off leaving the glowing nocturnal nock in the deer - added a small strip of reflective tape just above the broadhead.

This list of mistakes could probably go on for days if I thought hard enough!!!!!!!!

I will crash the server if I listed all of my mistakes.

My number one mistake and probably a mundane topic for most, was judging shooting distances. I practice shooting now at unknown distances and different angles. I also make sure I range multiple objects from my stand. I quit trying to range deer as they approached my set because I felt it was causing me to lose focus on making the shot.

If the mistakes are hunting related, your going to get a lot of answers from guys over years of experiences. Ill try and list a couple: hunted area incorrectly, going to fast into areas I wanted to hunt, over hunting locations, hunted night time sign...just to name a couple

I have run into this problem too. I can't go without water. There is one brand of water I buy here that has an ole fashioned thick bottle. I take one of those. Sometimes I refill it and keep it for future use.

I'm getting a water bladder for my pack instead of water bottles.

I just use a large nalgen water bottle. During the early season I fill it part way and put it in the freezer the night before.

I once left my shotgun slugs at home. LOL

That's what I use. No more fumbling around for a bottle or twisting a cap off and on. The hose is so much more convenient.
