I'm getting ready to put away my hunt gear. I got layoff at work til Feb.2. My lease land in Coshocton county Ohio is 200miles(4hrs.) I hunted hard from about Oct.30 to Jan.5.between Michigan and Ohio. Do I give it one last shot? Got a cut cornfield running along the bottom. Stands were set mainly up on ridges for rut hunt. I'm 56. Not a beast type hunter. Is there any chance to kill a good buck in January? I passed many bucks this year on the property but lookin for a good buck. When will majority of bucks loose there antlers? Am I crazy to go back down? My plan is to hunt Jan.26-29. Any advise besides "stay home"?

Re: January Deer Hunt
I'm leaning toward going down. Scouting is an option. Gonna wait til next week to decide based on weather. Curious if anyone has ever taken a good buck or even seen good bucks in January. Anyone ever seriously given it a shot in January? Any Ohio beasts had any luck?

Glad to hear from you Philski. I thought you were lost in the woods. Keep at it. Wish I could jump in one of those new F150's. Are they nice?

They're very nice with a big whitetail in back. Good to hear from you jdf. Still wondering if anyone's had any January buck luck. My motivation is low. But I hate to eat an Ohio tag.

Re: January Deer Hunt
I just saw a buck pushing the 130" class a week or so ago...
I've killed one Dec 27th and another looks like Jan 5th by the pic..
Not super late...but last year I chased em around till late January... Up to the fat lady sang..can't remember if it was the very last day or not..it was late in the season though...I saw a couple different shooters that day...just couldn't get one killed with the flintlock...
Can't kill em if you don't hunt em!
I see way more daytime movement this time of year..I cant speak much on mature bucks...but small bucks and does for sure...
Good luck!!! I'd be out if I had a tag!

Re: January Deer Hunt
Only been hunting down there for 5 years but I saw a 130s, 10 point 2 years ago near Canton. I've only hunted there in Jan twice and that's the only buck I saw, either trip. I mostly hunt down there in Nov and we see a decent amount of bucks then.
I'm thinking about making a run down there next weekend. Just waiting to hear if my buddy can swing it.

Up here in Mass/CT the bucks seem to dropping early this year. I don't know how it is in Ohio.
Hunting sure beats sitting on the couch. Go for it.
Good luck,
Bob

Re: January Deer Hunt
Just four hours away...... I would go give it a shot. As you know Coshocton is loaded with deer. Bucks are back on food and not traveling far from bed to food.
Heck nothing else, id go scout. If I had the time, resources, I would be there hunting

Re: January Deer Hunt
Thanks for the encouraging posts. Any words of wisdom, your experiences and tips are appreciated. Trying to get motivated for one more try. Good bucks in the area but odds are slim. It's my first year on this 200 acres. Also first year hunting hill country. With the snow I'm hoping to see movement and maybe a good buck. Getting close is a different story.
