Thanks so much for all your support.
Story on the buck.
It was December 28th and I still had my buck tag. Was about to hang it up for the year but my brother convinced me to go out with him. I sat on a hardwoods point leading into a swamp over a heavily used trail from marsh beds to a stand corn field. We got set up much later than expected (3:30pm), due to delays with just over an hour of light left. As I got settled in I hear a group of 6 does/fawns trotting my way through the swamp. They stop at 40yds. I got ready to take the bigger doe. Then they all looked back.
At this point I'm thinking, they're being chased by coyotes. Then there he was a big frame public land buck nose to the ground trotting after this group of deer. Two fawns branched off from the group. One walked away from me over a small hill in the marsh and the other towards the trail I was watching. The buck sniffed out the three does and headed towards the fawn away from me. My heart sank.
Just as fast as the buck disappeared over the hill in the marsh, he popped back up nose to the ground trotting towards the fawn that was now under my stand. I knew it was going to be a close shot if he followed the same trail as the fawn. As luck would have it the buck walked into my only shooting window at 10yds slightly quartering to me. I was only three sticks up on a open pine tree with a bush between me and him. I drew back, put the pin on the vitals and squeezed my release.
CRACK!
A shoulder shot. He took off running crashing through the thick brush where I came from. I thought to myself, it would be a miracle if I got this buck.
I waited until the rest of the does left and got down to look for my arrow. No blood. No arrow. But I had fresh deer tracks with the foot of snow from the other night. I tracked it for about 80yds and there he was laying there with my arrow still stuck in him. My biggest buck to date.
After gutting him I found out my arrow shot through the center of the shoulder blade and landed right in the middle of his heart. On top of that I found a scar on his chest, which I shot a similar buck in the area earlier that year. So we named him the 'Second Chance Buck'. I will never forget the story.
Thanks for asking and letting me relive it all over again.
