1st time beast style hunt is a success!
I wanted to share a story with you guys. I found this site a few months ago and man have I learned alot. I bought Dan's DVD's and watched them around the time my deer season opened. I started looking for beds right then. I started my season off still using my old methods and have killed several this year. My uncle and I seemed to have our doubts about using the beast style where we hunt. Its really steep, rugged terrain that's about 95% forest. We only hunt public land and we thought there was NO way possible for us to sneak in to these beds we found without being undetected.
We had a 3 day gun hunt on the public land we hunt this past weekend. My uncle went to one part of the WMA and I went to another part several miles away to hunt a doe bedding area. Where I live, we have 3 different ruts all within the same county. The deer on one part will be wide open chasing and the other part will not even be going yet. My uncle left on Thursday to do some scouting and found a bed that had been used a lot. He decided to put the beast style to work. The buck was bedded just off a bluff wall behind a rock that had fallen off the bluff. The rock was huge, like the size of a truck. The buck could only see one direction from this bed. My uncle thought how am I gonna know that this rock is the one where the bed is at? There was a sapling right beside the bed and he bent it over and tied some orange flagging tape in the top and let it go. On his way off the mtn, he started to pick trees out that he could see the ribbon from. He picked a tree about 60 yards from the bed that needed some trimming done. He sawed his way up in the tree and come back down and left his stand there.
Now, on Friday midday, he heads back there to the stand. He stalks his way to the trail that he cut off the mtn heading up to the stand. He said he only moved when squirrels moved or other noises were going on. He made it to his stand and quietly got in. He slowly made his way up the tree keeping a close eye on the bed as he went. He got settled in around 3 PM. He sat there the whole time doubting himself thinking theres no way that he could sneak up on a buck in his bed. At 4:35, 25 minutes before dark, the buck stands up out of his bed and stretches. He can't believe what he's seeing! He takes a step out from behind the rock and meets his maker. He's no giant but he's a mature public land buck. He ended up being a busted 5 year old 6 point that weighed 165 pounds.
It was extremely satisfying for both of us and has gave us both confidence that it can be done here if you put the time in. What we can't believe right now is why did the buck bed there with him standing in his bed the day before? We're both going to finish the season out beast style now. Thanks Dan and all you other guys that have answered my questions before and thanks for this website. It's the best one on the net.
