Deer are hitting the red oaks

Unread postby adrenalin » Sat Dec 06, 2014 11:06 am

Been seeing deer almost every night by my house feeding on red oak acorns. Thought it might be a good strategy if guys aren't seeing much. If you have a remote oak island in the marsh it might be good right now with the lack of ice out there. Sometimes late season can be real tough if you don't have the right food close by. Anyone else seeing this right now?

The record cold weather had them yarding up very early. See this in January never in November. This is a good friend of mines farm. He said the neighbors were complaining about not seeing any deer. Got to be in the right spot at the right time.

The guy that owns this farm doesn't allow any does to be killed. Buck only farm.

Deer have been pounding acorns from oaks nears houses/homesteads from what I've seen driving around. Turkeys too. Seems like they avoid this stuff earlier in the year but now it's prime feed.

In terms of deer sightings it's usually feast or famine for me this time of the year. Sit the right food enough times and they'll be there.

Unfortunately the thaw coming to the upper midwest next week might spread them back out a little.

That was the what I saw in gun season. The public I hunted was like a desert. No deer. Went across the street to my buddies place and found highways in the snow. All the trails were leading to oaks. I saw at least 3 bucks and killed my biggest gun buck off that stand.

Just my observation from this past year. As the pre rut was kicking in and all the does I had hitting oaks shifted their preferred food. Even though there was ample corn and oaks the beans is what they wanted. I would road scout my way home from work just to spot check some public land areas and see if they were being hunted. I can hunt during the week so unless I see evidence from hunters I don't see the vehicles or people. Doing this around 430 pm proved to me the amount of does in bean fields. This did not play well into my hunting because most of the beans in this area were to far from public land. But another nugget of info for upcoming years. When the beans start coming off fields the deer follow.
