What would you have done? (VIDEO ADDED)
4 days into my my gun hunt and I am sitting on stand listening to what sounds like a war across the road from Daves farm. I have to guess they were having one heck of a huge drive. It reminded me of the last time I sat that same stand, one year earlier. On that day a buck came by mortally wounded and dieing from infection.
I shot the buck, and put it out of its misery. It was so infected and stunk like rotten meat that it could not be eaten...
Now, back to yesterday... One year later. 1st time since that hunt. We left the farm alone for a few weeks hoping the bucks would hide there. After about 20 minutes of almost constant gunfire, it finally comes to a stop... I scanned around looking for movement, then a deer appeared coming from the direction of the shooting... It was a small buck, a little 4 point. I did not want to shoot this animal. I left the gun hanging on a limb and filmed the buck as it came over the hill, thats when I noticed it was stumbling, and even fell once... I thought really? again? and when the buck got close I centered the crosshairs on his shoulder and shot him using one of only two tags I have left for the rest of the season... I was not happy about it.
So... How about you? Would you shoot it? What if it was your last tag?

Here is the original "mercy killing" video from last year...

I would shoot it, then back track it to find the hunter that shot it.

Re: What would you have done?
Tough call on that one. I would have shot it also. Sometimes you just have to man up and do what is right. Letting it go, to suffer a miserable death is not what I am about.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

I am first a conservationist then a hunter. I couldn't turn my head and pretend I didn't see it. It would eat at me to much.
Condition of the meat would dictate my next move.
If it's bad, the 3 S's.....
Shoot
Shut up &
Shovel

Re: What would you have done?
Stanley summed up what I was going to say.Its not always about huge bucks and the biggest deer. You have to have compassion for deer. Some people think its weird that a deer hunter feels so much for s deer the way they do.You did the right and also a great thing.Kudos to you.

Re: What would you have done?
You know Dan, as bad I would like to have saved my tags, especially with your ability to take down some nice deer.....I would have had to done the exact thing as you and put him down. I would have had in the back of my mind with him limping and falling he would have died soon anyway, but we are supposed to be humane, and ethical.
I for one applaud you for doing what was right, especially two years in a row, and hope your next tag is used on something rewarding!

Re: What would you have done?
Can you group hunt off tags in WI?
If so, I would have shot it and brought it back to the idiots and asked who wanted to tag it...

Re: What would you have done?
I'd shoot it. I just think it's the right thing to do. That being said, deer are so resilient. A guy I work with shot a three legged buck last week. It had been missing a leg for at least a year.

Re: What would you have done?
You did the right thing and exactly what I would have done in the same situation. A suffering animal needs to be put down. I respect you for doing the right thing.

Re: What would you have done?
I think I would have shot it to. If I knew the neighbors and had a good relationship I would have tried to see if they wanted to take and tag it. I know deer are super resilient but I would not want to risk it, especially when a healthy deer could be eating what a wounded and possibly dieing deer is eating.

Re: What would you have done?
I would have done the same thing as you Dan. Hard decision but the right decision on a wounded deer.
