What can you tell me about this track?

Unread postby Zap » Tue Sep 28, 2010 1:13 am

Pic taken on Sunday at 4 PM.
The corn was cut wed-thursday, 1.5 inches of rain Thursday 7pm-midnight.
Friday wind was 3mph average.
No rain since then, except a few very light showers, the lighter is just over 3" long.
Track was in a high spot in the field, and I drove across there to set a stand on Saturday at 4pm and did not track any mud.
Track points N/E.

I can tell you there is a lighter in the track

I really don't know a huge amount about what size the animal is from a track. I just know BIG track = Big deer

Hard to say. You have to look at more than one track I think. Was he/she running, how wet was the soil?? Hopefully this link helps you.

Big track usually means big deer. But I have also seen some huge bucks dead that have small feet.

In my humble opinion, the track was made by a large buck, dewclaws clear in the dirt, splaying of the hoof, the corn leaf was there when he took the step, the little piece of corn cob was between his hoof when he stepped on it (rather than getting to that spot some time later, thinking due to the little bit of dirt on the lower left side of it. Edges of the track drying, and the small debris in the track from drying. I think he made the track after the major rain happened. With a light rain I don't think it woulda disturbed the track. If the track was made with the big rain, the track woulda held some water and when soaking in woulda smoothed the edges more. The bulk of the track is darker in color (wetter), I think it was made Sat night or Sunday AM.

The deer smokes and right now he's at a gas station buying another lighter. :D

Seriously, Not much can be told from one track. It was in a muddy cornfield which can make most tracks look big. It's hard to see any real detail in your photo.

Big Track does not always = Big Buck
I,ve seen some seemingly large tracks that came from doe's running. It seems like there is some debris in front of the track also which could mean it came from a running deer.

Looks like a walking track to me, but would have to see another to know for certain. 3 1/2 or older buck, the track appears to be 12 to 24 hours old based on the break down and drying pattern.
