Re: Funny how often this happens....
Ever wonder why they no longer get hunted? It is obviously a great spot or you would not of found it... When I look back at the wooden stands I built in the 70's and 80's I bet they were in great spots that are still great, but that they got over hunted and stopped producing... Years later, those spots go back to normal after the pressure goes away.

Re: Funny how often this happens....
This always amazes me, way back in no where i'll find a decent rubline or something and look around and there will be an ancient stand up. Or old railroad spikes that the tree has nearly grown around, where a stand once was.
Couple years ago i had a great spot and there was one of these old stands up, i really wanted to hunt the tree it was in as it had the best vantage, but i wasnt sure how old it was or if it may be used and left it and hunted about 70 yds away. some shots i had to pass cause i wasnt in that tree. Anyway one day an old guy comes walking up (this was the first and last time i had ever had someone walk up on me in these remote areas). We talked awhile and i pointed to the old stand, he said it was best friend from childhoods stand that had died two years prior. He was pretty pumped to see it and went and sat it in. I have seen quite a few of this guys stands in the woods and they are always in the right spot
Them old timers knew thier stuff. I NEVER see any new stands in these spots!

Re: Funny how often this happens....
When I was a kid in my teens these wooden stands were everywhere... If I studied the land and picked out a spot, no matter how remote, there would be a stand there. Now, I study the woods and if there is a great looking spot, its usually not being hunted or only the remains of an ancient stand remain... Although there are more hunters hitting the woods with more sophisticated equipment, and GPS to get them back to the truck, they seem to have lost touch with woodsman ship. It seems like all you hear people talk about is hunting near food sources...

I have found my fair share of these setups in the mtn too. Most of them are rotted out 2x4's clinging to the tree by 1 nail, all gray and worn down. They are very subtle but tell a great story if you stop and take notice.
I just kill mtn bucks

Re: Funny how often this happens....
I've gone to trim "just a couple" twigs out of the way. Grabbed one and noticed a two-year-old cut mark. The twigs were the sucker growth from that cut.
Got up in the tree once this year and had a nice bowhanger right where needed. Then I noticed a few last-year's cuts that I hadn't seen from the ground. A few trees away was a couple 2X4's where a stand had been.
I kept an old stand for a couple years that I'd found bolted to a fallen, rotted tree: it was a tractor seat welded to a steel band that went around the tree with several boltholes cut thru it. I eventually put it in with the steel recyclables at work. I didn't know what to do with it.

Re: Funny how often this happens....
I see this a lot, reminds me of an old thread I started about hunters back in the day. Compared to the modern hunter (not beast members) they seemed to put in more effort into scouting and stand placement. When I go way back I often find old stands or even just a board nailed to a tree near buck bedding areas or bedding areas in general. They might not have had all the fancy hunting gizmos or deer knowledge we have today but the woodsmanship was still there.

Found a good looking saddle this spring on a topo map and went and scouted it one day. Sure enough, the saddle had rubs in it and looked like a good spot. Walked just down one side a little and found an old rotten treestand. I wonder how many deer have died in that saddle?

I am one of those oldtimers!!!! Dang!
How many times have I had a young dude putting up easy metal stands, next to my wooden ones I lugged 2x4s in the woods to build!
I remember when there was no other way than building a stand out of wood. Then the baker tree climber came and everything changed.....

A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

Re: Funny how often this happens....
Think about it. These guys relied on the meat much more than most of us nowadays and the only option for a tree stand was to haul in the supplies and build it… it BETTER be in the right spot!
No Shortcuts. No Excuses. No Regrets.

Re: Funny how often this happens....
Please tell me that you guys who did the wooden stands did it over a d few days? I am just picturing you guys with hauling out a stand made stand and little boards for steps and all your other hunting gear. Ouch, sounds like one heck of a backache the next day.

I love finding old rotting stands in my spots it makes my nose twitch
I built all my own stands when i was a kid too, some are still out there. I liked to find a tree with a crotch and nail in a horozontal 2x10 or 2x12 to stand on. Makes the modern platforms seem pretty large Lucky my carcass isn't out there laying at the base of one of those trees.

Re: Funny how often this happens....
I really enjoyed reading the post under this topic.
I have to admit, before the beast I honestly maybe only found a handful of ancient rotted stands throughout the years of hunting.
Now with cyber scouting and then walking to spots in a map, I locate no less than 10 per season.
I agree with Dan and think true woodsman ship is fading. These old ancient stands were built by guys that could scout the woods and recognize these spots we hope to cyber scout and find.
I have made the comment to my brother in law several times in the pass couple years about how the BEAST and company had at least taught me where to hunt!

One spot Ive been hunting on public and seeing deer, ...There is an old crumbled wood ladder stand just below a thick bedding area on a bench. Its a classic funnel leading to it, easy to see why its there .
