Does kicking off fawns...

Unread postby whitetail_addict » Sat Nov 01, 2014 2:24 am

How long before actually coming into heat do does typically begin to kick off their fawns? Fawns are starting to be seen without does in may area and I'm wondering if the first does are likely coming into heat then.

Around here the fawns hook up with another doe/fawn group quickly.

I would think the doe is pretty ready when the fawn/fawns are separated.

Small one time scrapes indicate a doe that goes in early.....no licking branch....just a scrape left for a buck to find.
I saw one of those last Friday. Then there is a 3 fawn group with a doe a day or two later.

I saw no three fawn groups at all before that and that scrape was not hit again as of Tuesday.

I'm thinking Wisconsin is literally moments from the rut kicking off... I'm talking chasing, breeding, etc. It should be a good weekend for hunting.

I bet there are a few doe in season there already.

Anyway, I hope all the Northern Hunters have a good weekend of swacking..

The does will come in stacked over a 30 day period, with that rare lone doe coming a little before or after. That starts around Oct 28th and ends around Nov 28th, peek between Nov 12 to 16th (here).

When a doe is dogged by a buck (and not ready) she will hook right back up with her fawns afterwards. When a doe is actually about to come in, she will leave the fawns for a few day's (4-7) to take care of business then hook back up....Nature's Way of looking out for the little guys.

To answer the original question....they will leave the fawns behind about 24 hours before coming in.
