I know a corn pile works but how about a bean pile?

They'll eat them. They eat less beans than corn due to the beans being a more complete source of nutrition.

Think of it as eating a chicken breast and getting full, vs eating a loaf of bread and then still being able to eat a steak dinner. Higher protein foods mean they'll need less of it.

Did an internship in college on a place that supplemented their herd with straight beans in feeders. Deer still used them every day, but didn't eat as many pounds as if it were corn. The carbs are quickly burned and needed to be replenished (corn), where as the beans satisfy their needs longer

I've used a mix of soybeans and corn and they seem to prefer soybeans first but they really like pumpkins.

Bean piles are more rare than corn piles. ;)
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
