I think hitting a rib sends them into orbit sometimes. I heart shot a buck (hit no ribs) in 1980 He was making a rub. I stuck him and he continued making the rub. He walked about 20 yds. and fell over dead. This was late season with a day to go until season end. Really appreciated that buck. Far from my biggest but he is one of my favorites.

You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Great buck!!

Like a couple of the other guys I have seen a heart shot deer react very strangely too. I shot a small buck when I was a teenager and he ran a little ways, then bedded down and his head did not go down for several minutes. Another nice buck I heart shot and he didn't hardly twitch, just kept walking at the same pace for 20 yards then fell over. You did the right thing though...if in doubt always wait.

Congrats on a great buck!
Yea, I've seen some funny things with heart shots as well.
It may be the portion of the heart that is hit. Pressure side or the scavenge side?
Or like Stan said it may be the amount of collateral damage/pain or lack there of that also happens.
Either way........you got your self a Dandy.
Congrats Again!
